I Had to Write a Song
When things began on that first day Who’d have thought it’d turn out this way As I daily pay the price I pay 'Cause I had to write a song
I can only think of what might be Had I not heard that melody Somewhere deep inside of me When I had to write a song
There are a lot of tears I’d never have cried A lot of times when down inside I’d not have known the death I died But I had to write a song
I might have been more understood By all those in my neighborhood If life had just been fine and good Instead, I had to write a song
Now morning’s light will always bring A call to keep alive the dream To find a way to let it sing Since I had to write a song
After all is said and done I’d like to think that everyone Remembered me for what was sung And know, I had to write a song
