I Had to Write a Song

When things began on that first day
Who’d have thought it’d turn out this way
As I daily pay the price I pay
'Cause I had to write a song

I can only think of what might be
Had I not heard that melody
Somewhere deep inside of me
When I had to write a song

There are a lot of tears I’d never have cried
A lot of times when down inside
I’d not have known the death I died
But I had to write a song

I might have been more understood
By all those in my neighborhood
If life had just been fine and good
Instead, I had to write a song

Now morning’s light will always bring
A call to keep alive the dream
To find a way to let it sing
Since I had to write a song

After all is said and done
I’d like to think that everyone
Remembered me for what was sung
And know, I had to write a song

Did I Remember to Thank You for That?

Lord, I’ve been wondering, I’m sure You’d know
It doesn’t really sound like much. . . and yet
It concerns the way You’ve graciously provided for me so.
Did I remember to thank You for that?

And as a child You were there when soundly I would sleep
Now I stand and watch my baby nap
To think it’s the same way You’ve watched over me
Did I remember to thank You for that?

Then thru those sleepless nights when I’d wrestle with my thoughts
Those of cold hard bitter facts
The morning always came and strength it always brought
Did I remember to thank You for that?.

And when I prayed “It be Your will”, and that’s the way it was
I almost wished I could take it back
But the sorrow would lift as so often it does
Did I remember to thank You for that?

Those far away that I’ve loved for so long
Lord, you know right where they’re at
You’ve kept them safe, You’ve kept them free from harm
Did I remember to thank You for that?

There are times I find myself almost ashamed
When I realize the gratitude I’ve lacked
But I pray You’ll accept my thanks just the same
For that, and that. . . and that
